The Essential Sleep Aids to Make Part of Your Daily Routine

There are some sleep aids which are essential to getting a good night’s sleep. The human body has an internal clock that helps it determine when it is time to go to sleep. To ensure that it is functioning correctly, make sure you sleep at the same time every night of the week. Also, once you have developed a routine, make sure you follow it. The sleep aids that form your routine are there to give your body cues that it is time to sleep.

Sleep Aids: Things to Do Before Bed

To facilitate a good night’s sleep, it is important that you are relaxed and comfortable. Sleep aids which can help you forget your troubles and relax include: reading a book (preferably something light), going for a gentle late night walk, making love with your partner, having a hot bath or drinking a glass of warm milk. While in bed, visualisation techniques to help you fall asleep can be very effective. Where possible, try to keep the activities that comprise your routine out of your bedroom, as it should be a place reserved for sleep. Once you have found things that work for you, stick to them.

What Not to Do Before Bed

There are things that you should avoid as part of your bed time routine. Do not eat heavy meals, as this makes your digestive system work. Avoid caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea and soft drinks.  Do not perform stimulating activities such as playing video games or exercising. While strenuous exercise can help you sleep, it should be performed at least a few hours before bed. Do not dwell on the stresses of your daily life, such as personal issues or work deadlines, particularly when in your bedroom.

Performing the sleep aids while avoiding the tasks mentioned above should go a long way to helping you develop an effective before-bed routine.
