Aromatherapy for a Good Night’s Sleep
There are a number of natural sleep aids that can help you fall asleep. One of the most common causes of insomnia is excess stress. By alleviating that stress, we are more likely to enjoy a good night’s sleep. One effective sleep aid is aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy works by using the scents of calming essential oils to help you relax and destress. Oils that are effective in combatting insomnia are lavender, lemon and chamomile. A couple drops of the oil can be added to a hot bath just before bed for its relaxing aroma, or a candle aromatherapy diffuser can be used to give the bedroom a pleasant smell.
Mental Sleep Aids
Mental sleep aids can be very effective in reducing stress, forgetting daily troubles and preparing the body for sleep. Two common mental sleep aids are meditation and visualisation.
Meditation is performed by focusing on your breathing, ignoring any thoughts that come to your mind. It is a skill that requires practice to not be overwhelmed by thoughts of work, relationships, demands of everyday life and any other distractions that might be racing through your head. However, with enough time and patience, you will be able to quickly and effectively clear your mind and achieve a relaxed state.
Visualisation works by imagining a nice, relaxing scene. Imagine you are sitting by the beach on a warm summer’s day, listening to the waves and feeling the breeze curl around you. You are sitting on a balcony holding your lover’s hands, watching the sun slowly sink beneath the horizon. Imagine whatever scene you like, so long as it helps you relax and de-stress.
Physical Sleep Aids
Physical sleep aids work by relaxing the body. These include massages, perhaps with scented oils (such as lavender) to help you relax even further. Sitting down in a warm spa is also a great way to relax. Acupuncture is an increasingly popular form of Chinese medicine and reputably an effective sleep aid for some people.
